FOR PATIENTS

What Is Pathology

Pathology is a branch of medicine dedicated to studying the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences. Pathologists assist other physicians in helping to determine what particular disease or condition is affecting the patient and how best to treat it. They do this by studying, either grossly (with the naked eye) or under a microscope, the materials making up bodily tissues, organs, skin, blood, and other fluids, which is referred to as anatomic pathology, or through laboratory analysis of blood urine and other fluids, which is referred to as clinical pathology. Pathology may be further subdivided into subspecialty categories, such as dermatopathology, which focuses on the skin, or hematopathology, the study of blood.

What role do pathologists play in caring for me?

Information provided by the pathologist is critical to helping your doctor decide how best to proceed with your treatment. Often, your doctor has a strong sense of what your condition may be, but the pathologist can confirm that and narrow down the exact condition for him or her, allowing for the best treatment possible.
